I’ve always been a creative person and I really like to learn new skills. One day I was watching The Great Pottery Throw Down on television and thought I might enjoy doing that. I went for a throwing taster session and loved it so I decided to enrol on a weekly course at The Kiln Room in London. Then I’ve been lucky to find a studio space to sublet two days a week.  A year later I bought a potter’s wheel and now I’ve set up my own studio in Eastbourne Old Town. Just one thing leading to another really…It is hard to explain but it just felt right, so I decided to do something with it (being stubborn helped me on this occasion ha ha!). The rest is a lot of practising  and experimenting.

I studied Art at University and worked in various museums in London. I’ve been very influenced by artists, painters, sculptors, etc. I make simple strong shapes, rather straight and minimalist. It’s all in the details: the foot, the handle, a simple shape in a good canvas for playing more with patterns and colours. I find turning (trimming the bottom of pots) very fulfilling. Suddenly they turn from a muddy volume stuck on a wood board to a tidy functional object. Putting my Elise Ceramics stamp on my pieces when they are just turned (but still leather-hard) makes them suddenly exist. Even if they still need to be fired twice and glazed, the shape is definite."
